Foreign Minister Oskanian Meets with Turkish Foreign Minister
June 4, 2003

Armenia's Minister of Foreign Affairs Vartan Oskanian (above, first row, sixth from left) met for the first time with Turkey's Foreign Minister, Abdullah Gul. The two were in Madrid for the two-day Foreign Ministerial Session of NATO and the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council.

They discussed regional issues, the Nagorno Karabagh resolution process, as well as bilateral matters. The ministers agreed that improved relations between the two countries would have its positive effect on regional stability and security. Ministers Oskanian and Gul found this first get-acquainted session was valuable for promoting dialogue, and agreed to meet again.

Minister Oskanian also met with the co-Chairmen of the Minsk Group. They discussed issues relating to recent and possible developments surrounding the negotiations process, as well as the co-chairs' visit to the region.

During the EAPC Ministerial, the ministers discussed the role of EAPC and NATO in contributing to peace and stability in the Euro-Atlantic area and in meeting new challenges to security. The members also focused on the challenge of democratic transformation in the Euro-Atlantic area as a major security investment.
