Nagorno-Karabagh
is a Presidential Republic. The Head of State is the
President. The same person cannot be elected for more than two terms. The President¸s principal duty is to form and carry out foreign and defense policies and to secure normal functioning of all state institutions. According to the current legislation, the NKR¸s President exercises full executive power. The President appoints the Prime Minister, maintains Government structure and personnel.

Bako S.Sahakian was elected President of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic.
BAKO SAHAK SAHAKYAN
Born on 30 August, 1960 in Stepanakert
Finished Stepanakert secondary school N1 in 1977
In 1978-80 served in the Soviet Army
In 1981 started to work at the Stepanakert automated production shop N9 as a machineman. After a year he was transferred to the Stepanakert enterprise of construction materials as a quarry worker
In 1983-1987 worked as a restoration master at Stepanakert Branch of the Scientific Department of Ancient Monuments
In 1987-1990 worked at the Nagorno Karabakh retgional procurement administration as a procurer
Since 1988 Bako Sahakyan has been known as one of the pioneers of the Artsakh movement
In 1990 joined Self-Defense Forces of Nagorno Karabakh
In 1992-1993 Deputy to the Commander of the NKR Self-Defense Committee on the rear
In 1993-1995 NKR Defese Army’s Rear Staff Commander
In 1995-1996 Deputy to the NKR Defense Army Commander on Foreign Relations
In 1996-1997 Deputy on the rear services to the Commander of NKR Defese Army 10th highland infantry division
In 1997-1999 Assistant to the Minister of the Interior and National Security of the Republic of Armenia
In 1999-2001 Minister of the Interior of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic
In 2001-2007 headed the NKR State Department of National Security – Director of the NKR National Security Service
Awarded with many orders and medals, in particular, "Battle Cross" Order of the 1st degree, "Sparapet Vazgen Sargsyan" Order and Russian Federation Order "Peter the Great" of the 1st degree, "For Service to Fatherland" medal of the 1st degree
Bako Sahakyan is a real member to the Academy of Security, Defense and Law of the Russian Federation
Graduated from Artsakh State University’s Law Department
Married, has two children
