Church inscriptions erased in Nij
NORWEGIAN EMBASSY, BAKU--February 24, 2005

Since 2003 the Norwegian Humanitarian Enterprise has been financing the restoration of the St. Elisha church in the village of Nij, Azerbaijan. The church was built in 1823. The restoration is carried out by the Udin-Albanian Christian Community. Some time ago three inscriptions on the walls of the church were erased. The inscriptions were in the Armenian language and contained information about when the church was built, by whom and with which means. The Norwegian Humanitarian Enterprise and the Norwegian Embassy have since the beginning of the restoration admonished the Udin-Albanian Christian Community that the inscriptions should not be removed or damaged. The inscriptions have been left in peace for almost 200 years and the Norwegian Embassy and the Norwegian Humanitarian Enterprise deeply deplore that they have been erased in connection with the restoration of the church. We condemn this act of vandalism and have brought it to the attention of Azerbaijani authorities. The authorities have promised to investigate the case.
