March 07, 2006

QUESTION: On February 27th it was announced inTaiwan that the activities of the National Unification Council and the application of National Unification Guidelines is being halted. A number of countries have reacted negatively in this regard because this step has brought about tensions on the two sides of the Taiwan Straits. What is the viewpoint of the Armenian Foreign Ministry on this matter?

MR. GASPARIAN: Armenia has expressed its support of the "One China" principle on multiple occasions. "Our support is also expressed in a joint statement signed by the presidents of Armenia and China in September 2004. In our opinion, such unilateral moves are not useful in solving the problem of the unification of the two segments of the Chinese people.
