September 18, 2008

Question: Mr. Minister, according to the information of Azerbaijani Mass Media, Matthew Bryza, Co-Chair of Minsk Group, announced that Turkey may have its contribution in Nagorno-Karabakh peace process and help Armenia to come up with more flexible position. Which is your approach on this viewpoint?

Answer: If we believe to the information of Azerbaijani Mass Media, then it is most likely that Mr. Bryza by mistake used Armenia instead of Azerbaijan, because Turkey can use its influence to make Azerbaijani position more flexible, taking into account the fact, that the leaders of both Turkey and Azerbaijan, used “one nation, two states” formula to characterize Azerbaijani-Turkish relations. In this context, it’s clear exaggeration to speak about Turkey’s possible influence on Armenia.

Question: Is the news about the meeting of Armenian and Turkish diplomats in Switzerland true?

Answer: There were always contacts between Armenian and Turkish diplomats and there is nothing extraordinary in those meetings.

Question: There is news about trilateral meeting (Armenia-Azerbaijan-Turkey) in New-York by the mediation of Turkish Foreign Minister. Could you confirm this information?

Answer: On September 7 in Yerevan I and Turkish Foreign Minister agreed to meet in New-York within on the sidelines of UN General Assembly. Mr. Babacan suggested to organize a meeting in trilateral format. I am not against that meeting.

Question: The information on changing of the Minsk Group format is being circulated. It that information grounded?

Answer: Minsk Group is an efficient format of Nagorno-Karabakh peace process, which have proved its vitality and it enjoys support of international community. The negotiations continue on the base of proposals of OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs and within that format. I think there are serious prerequisites to solve the problem, which can create new opportunities for regional cooperation for all countries.

Question: According to the Turkish Media some documents will be signed during your meeting with Ali Babacan in New-York. What can You say about the accuracy of that information?

Answer: According to the Armenian and Turkish Presidents’ instructions, we had negotiations with Turkish Foreign Minister Babacan.  We expressed our determination to normalize bilateral relations and we are trying to take steps in that direction. I hope that we’ll follow that way without creating artificial obstacles for each other.
