On August 8, an exhibition dedicated to the 18th-19th century Romanian-Armenian
well known businessman, diplomat and politician M. Manouk bey Mirzaian
was launched at the Museum of Bucharest, Romania.
M. Manouk bey was a prominent figure in the history of Romania
and his efforts during the Russian-Turkish war of 1806-1812 proved
to be vital. He received titles, political positions and awards
from both Russian and Ottoman Empires. His influence on both empires
played a crucial role as a mediator in Russian-Turkish negotiations,
and it was in his private Bucharest house that the Russian-Turkish
Peace Treaty was signed in 1812.
M. Manouk bey devoted his resources for charities in Romania and
other countries. His endowments were used for building many schools
and churches for different Armenian communities.
In the opening ceremony, speeches were delivered by the President
of the Museum of Bucharest, M. Ionel Ionitan, Armenian Ambassador
to Romania M. Yeghishe Sargsian, Member of Romania's Senate as well
as President of Romania's Armenian Community M. Varoujan Voskanian.
The exhibition will last for one year and displays personal documents,
notes, photos and other belongings of M. Manouk bey. For the occasion,
a book about his life has also been published by the museum.
