Members of the EU Troika, headed by Sir Brian Fall, UK Special Envoy
to the South Caucasus, visited Armenian officials on the first leg
of a regional trip.
The delegation comprised of representatives of the current UK Presidency,
representatives of the upcoming Austrian Presidency, as well as
representatives of the EU, including officials from the commission,
and headed by Ambassador Heikki Talvitie, who is EU Javier Solana's
Special Representative to the South Caucasus.
In their meeting with Minister Oskanian, the delegation expressed
hopes that the new year would bring a resolution of the NK conflict
even closer. Minister Oskanian repeated Armenia's readiness to use
political will to make the difficult decisions that will be necessary
for a lasting peace, assuming that the Azerbaijani authorities are
prepared to do the same.
They also discussed Armenia-Turkey relations and the still-closed
border between the two countries. Armenia's Minister repeated the
hope that this is on the priority agenda in accession talks between
the EU and Turkey. Minister Oskanian also repeated Armenia's expectation
that the Armenian Action Plan for the European Neighborhood Policy
would be developed together with the EU sooner rather than later,
despite whatever obstacles are created by Azerbaijan for that process
to go forward with all 3 countries of the South Caucasus.
The meetings took place on October 24, immediately following President
Kocharian's visit to Brussels, where he'd met with the EU leadership.
Miniser Oskanian said in the Press Conference that followed the
meetings, this visit of the Troika, so soon after that visit, served
to reaffirm Armenia's positions regarding its commitment to the
path of Eurointegration.
