 Minister Oskanian was in Kiev, Ukraine, on a one-day official visit
on Monday, June 19, 2006.
In the morning, the Minister laid a wreath on the Memorial to Holodomor
victims, those who died as a result of the Great Famine of 1932-1933.
Then, the Minister was received by his counterpart, Ukrainian Foreign
Minister Boris Tarasyuk. The two discussed issues having to do with
Armenia-Ukraine relations. Both diplomats stressed the necessity
for holding regular political dialogue, and expressed their satisfaction
with the level of cooperation in the economic sphere, even as they
agreed to search for ways to increase the present volume of trade.
They underscored the role of the Armenian-Ukrainian Intergovernmental
Commission and recalled that the next meeting of the Commission
will be held in Yerevan in the Fall.
In order to trigger cooperation between the two countries in the
cultural sphere, the Foreign Ministers decided to set about to holding,
together with the Ministries of Culture, Armenian and Ukrainian
Weeks in each other's countries.
Ministers Oskanian and Tarasyuk exchanged ideas on the direction
of their countries' foreign policies, and explained to each other
the present stage of the relations of each with the European Union
and NATO.
They also focused on issues related to energy security and regional
transport.
Further, Minister Tarasyuk presented the essence of Ukraine's mediatory
mission in the Transdniester conflict settlement, while Minister
Oskanian presented the present status of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict
settlement.
After the meeting, the two Ministers participated in a joint press
conference.
Later the same day, Minister Oskanian met with President Viktor
Yushchenko and Prime Minister Yuri Yekhanurov, where similar issues
were discussed.
