In Brussels on December 7, Minister Oskanian met with Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, NATO Secretary General, at NATO headquarters.
During the meeting, the two discussed the implementation of the Individual Partnership Action Plan (IPAP), which is at the core of the Armenia – NATO partnership, the first two-year stage of which was launched in January 2006. The interlocutors also discussed the events to be held within the framework of the Action Plan.
The Minister and the Secretary General both expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the IPAP first interim assessment, and discussed at the meeting of the North-Atlantic Council, held on January 26, in 26 + 1 format. Minister Oskanian noted that such assessments are valuable to us from the aspect of clarification of NATO standards and requirements.
While speaking of NATO’s deepening cooperation with Armenia, the SG stressed the importance of consolidation of the democratization process in Armenia, noting that NATO will support the reforms in the defense system. He also highly welcomed Armenia’s participation in peacekeeping activities.
The Minister and the Secretary General stressed the role that the new NATO Information Center in Yerevan can play in the enhancement of the society’s awareness of Armenia – NATO partnership, and the Alliance’s activities.
Minister Oskanian noted the valuable contribution of the Consultative Group created by NATO, for the elaboration of the National Security Concept of the Republic of Armenia.
At the Minister’s request, the Secretary General spoke about the outcome of the NATO Summit held in Riga on November 28-29. The interlocutors also touched upon Armenia – Turkey relations, and Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement process.
Following the meeting, Minister Oskanian signed the Memorandum of Understanding on the Facilitation of Vital Civil Cross Border Transport.
